How to open your new art book

Apropos to the essays on art I've just been reading, here's something I discovered inside an 1896 book I've just been cataloguing for the Stratford-Perth Archives:

And if you're reading simply a regular novel and not a huge, oversized art book, here is another set of instructions.

  1. Two sets of clear and concise instructions on how to open a book; expert, concise and not likely to be met with elsewhere. I love posts like this one!

  2. What a great post! Think of the care people used to have to take with their books, it's really amazing...

  3. One of the benefits of cataloguing older books is coming across ephemera like this. I especially enjoy #8 - "if books should be delivered to you in cold weather" - it makes me laugh.
