Martel-Harper Challenge

Dewey has set up another challenge just as she has threatened....and I have to join it! She has organized a quarterly challenge based on the booklist which Yann Martel has been sending to PM Harper, and which you know I am following. The set up is as follows:

You may know that Yann Martel sends books to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper every two weeks. He’s sent 38 so far, and you can read the letters he sends along with them at that site. For our challenge, I propose that we also read those books. I’ll ask people to sign up quarterly, committing to three books each time they sign up.

Ok, so this should help me catch up on this list a little! My 3 books for Oct-Nov-Dec:

Metamorphosis / Frank Kafka

Kreutzer Sonata / Leo Tolstoy

The Rez Sisters / Thompson Highway

  1. I'll be interested to hear what you think of Metamorphosis. I finished it about a month ago and was left somewhat disappointed.

  2. Duckthief - to tell you the truth, I've been putting this one off because of my phobia of anything slightly buggy...and the descriptions of legs waving etc. kind of creep me out! I have to read it though, as I've read Nabokov's essay on it even though I don't like reading criticism before the actual book it is about. Oh well!

  4. It's not a very long book so you won't have to read about him for long. And just think, then you'll never have to read it again.

  6. I just signed up for this challenge. I see you've been reading the Martel-Harper books for a long time and it looks like you're Canadian....Tell me, how long is Harper in office for? I wonder if I'll ever be able to catch up.

  7. Sadly, Harper will be in government for up to 4 more years. His government is a minority one, and traditionally elections are called sooner when that happens but who knows? They only HAVE to have an election after 4 years. That's a LOT of books. :) It always makes me happy when he chooses one I've already read!

  8. I have to add that I'm amazed his office hasn't responded, essentially, at all. That first letter was just a courtesy...

  9. And barely courteous! A form letter from an underling. But honestly, I am really not surprised. Harper has a history of only doing what he wants to do, with very little attention to public opinion.
