Writing & Reading

I've been away from my blog for a while; I don't even have the excuse of it being back to school time -- I am not a student, not a teacher, and don't have kids of my own. But oh well, let's just say it must be something about this time of year that makes me want to get all my notebooks organized and my pencils sharpened. I've been catching up with my own writing lately, something I've been neglecting.

I read about the 3 Day Novel online, and decided abruptly, two days before the Labour Day weekend, that I was going to sign up. My advice to other 3 Day novelists? Don't sign up if you haven't been writing regularly! It was great fun, but I ended with an 80 page mess of bits of story. I had no real plan. However, there were some major benefits. First, reminding me to JUST GET WRITING. Having to actually follow through and finish a rough draft was most of the incentive for my signing up. Second, being able to say to family that I couldn't help out with such things as painting the walls because I was writing was very amusing. And true, for once. Third, I can now drawl nonchalantly, when someone asked what I did on the weekend, oh, I was writing my novel. He he he.

I really enjoyed reading a few of the past winners of this insane contest over the past month or so. They are all so different and so wacky. I loved Day Shift Werewolf by Jan Underwood, and it fits perfectly into Carl's RIP challenge, so I'll share a bit about it shortly. For now, off to do a little more scribbling.

  1. No time to blog, you were working on your novel! Even if is messy, hopefully there are bits in it worth saving and expanding. What fun!

  3. You know, it was really fun, and I think there are a couple of salvageable bits to work on. It was quite a challenge!

  4. That sounds both fun and exhausting. Have you ever done the annual National Novel Writing Month thing?

  5. Bookfool - NaNoWriMo is up next for a writing challenge. I've been contmeplating it, but am worried that my November is looking pretty busy this year. I may give it a shot anyhow; I'll have to decide sometime in the next month. Have you ever thought of trying it?

  6. You didn't ask me, but I tried NaNoWriMo last year. I almost finished, and it is absolutely terrible! But it was a great exercise and I look forward to doing it again some time!

  7. Good for you in getting started with your novel. =)

I have considered the NaNoWriMo but I don't see how it is at all possible right now. Maybe as a goal for the future.

  8. I think making an attempt at writing solidly for 3 days is fairly impressive. Congratulations on meeting the challenge! I'm sure there is more worth salvaging than you're admitting.
