Return of the RIP, 3rd time round

Well I am glad to see I am not the only one shocked by how suddenly it is time for Carl's R.I.P. Challenge again this year! Where did this year go??? Even though I am still halfway through some of my other challenges and just beginning a couple more, I've been waiting for Carl to post about the resurgence of the RIP -- I so look forward to it. And I am in the mood to begin again, hvaing just read Will Storr's Will Storr vs. the Supernatural. (quick review: creepy and hilariously funny in parts, and like Bookfool said, "loads of fun daylight reading", but don't read it alone at bedtime!)

I like Carl's idea of having a pool of books from which to choose, so thinking big I'll choose Peril the First; reading 4 books with some sort of scary connection. Here's my pool of ideas, I may swap out later anyhow but I am aiming to pick from these ones on the never-ending TBR:

1. Vernon Lee / Supernatural Tales

2. Elizabeth Gaskell / Gothic Tales

3. Robertson Davies / High Spirits : a collection of ghost stories

4. Barbara Michaels / Ammie Come Home, or, The Crying Child, or, Greygallows

5. Dan Simmons / The Terror

6. Shirley Jackson / The Haunting of Hill House

7. Ray Bradbury / something....

8. Wilkie Collins / The Woman in White

  1. I am almost dumbfounded that this weekend is last in August and that it will be September already. Unbelievable! So glad you're joining in. I'm glad we're doing the book pool this year. Feels so much more relaxed plus people are listing a ton of great looking books that I am adding to my own lists for future reference. It is a win-win situation!

  2. Love your book pool! I've got The Terror in mine too. And for Shirley Jackson I have We Have Always Lived in the Castle. It's waiting for me to pick up at the library tomorrow. I can hardly wait to start it! Hill House marvelous. Hope you enjoy it!

  3. Hi! We both have Bradbury on our pool! Lovely! I forgot to put Wilkie Collins in mine though but since RIP II I've been meaning to pick that up.

  4. Nice list! The Collins book is fabulous, and I'm curious about the Gaskell. I didn't know she had a collection of gothic tales.

  5. Great list! I might have to snag Gaskell and Collins and add them to my prospective pool.

  6. Sounds awesome but I'm still stuck on the Chunkster Challenge.

Also, I like the background change you've made to your template. The blog looks much brighter and fresher now.

  7. Carl - exactly! Thanks for hosting again.

Stefanie - eventually I am going to get The Terror read, really!

Lightheaded - nice of you to drop by. Another Bradbury fan, hurrah. Can't wait to see what you read this time round.

Dorothy - I've been reading Collins backward, from his lesser known books on up. Time for Woman in White, I'd say. And I just love anything by Gaskell.

Bookchronicle - thanks, I've been snagging ideas from everyone else too.

Duckthief - do join! This is such a fun challenge, and you can read only one if you want. I've looked at my Chunkster list and so far I've read, um,0 of 4. Thanks for the blog decor comments, I never know what to change around. I've been looking for a 3 column design like yours, though.

  8. You have no idea how long I looked for that bloody template. I spent more than a month pulling out my hair. I did find one I liked with a book theme and a great photo but it was WordPress. Feel free to use my template if you like. I lifted it off of another bookblogger and I'm still trying to tweak it to my liking.

  9. Great list. I haven't read any of them, so will look forward to seeing your thoughts on the ones you read, and probably adding some to my ever expanding wishlist!
