Since it's Halloween, I'll feature a fun ghostly collection by one of my most beloved authors. It's L.M. Montgomery's Among the Shadows, a collection of ghost stories she wrote for various magazines, which were later gathered up to form this book. To find out more about it, you can read summaries of all the stories over at Tickled Orange, a good LMM page.
It contains nineteen stories, all dealing with the supernatural and mystery. She allows herself to deal with darker subjects than she is usually known for, and the tales have an adult flavour as a result. Love lasts beyond the grave, nasty characters get what's coming to them, and gothic elements are given full rein in the story "The Red Room". The stories definitely read like magazine pieces of the day, so be prepared for some over-the-top prose and a bit of sentimentality. But if you are fond of LMM or just of the writing style of the era, you will enjoy this one.
